The white room
The White Room of Caffè Pedrocchi is remembered for a historical event that happened on 8 February 1848 when Austrian soldiers opened fire during a student uprising. One of the pistols shot killed a student. A plaque next to a bullet hole in one of the walls of the hall has been placed to remember this tragic event.
In the White Room, there’s also a plaque with the famous quote by Stendhal, a frequent visitor of the Pedrocchi building, who paid homage to it in his novel “La Chartreuse de Parme” (The Charterhouse of Parma):
“It was in Padua that I began to see life the Venetian way, with ladies sitting in cafes. The excellent restaurateur Pedrocchi, the best in Italy”
Interestingly, the White Room was originally called the Black Room, as the furniture designed by architect Jappelli was first painted black.
